Terms

Terms of use

Reading this quarterly happens on the terms set out below. They cover what its reviews claim, how the writing may be quoted, the position on spoilers, and where responsibility stops.

Everything published here is one reader's criticism of a completed playthrough. No review reports a developer's intentions or describes how any game was actually made.

The status of these reviews

Each review records a judgement reached under the conditions described on the method page. Where a review infers that a design decision followed from a small team's constraints, that inference is drawn from the finished game alone and is not a report of anything anybody told me.

Playtimes describe my own play and nothing broader. Nine hours means the nine hours it took me to reach a stopping point, on the settings stated, on one machine, with whatever attention I had that week.

Spoilers

Reviews describe how these games are put together, including how they end, because games of this length cannot be discussed usefully otherwise. This is stated on the method page and here, and no warnings appear inside the reviews themselves.

No advice, no storefront

Nothing here is guidance about what to buy. There are no storefront links anywhere on this site, deliberately, and a favourable review is a description rather than a recommendation. What you play remains entirely your decision.

Quotation and reuse

Brief quotation in articles, videos, essays and discussion is welcome where this quarterly is credited and the quotation is not trimmed so as to invert its meaning. Republishing a full review, translating one without permission, or feeding this writing into commercial machine learning systems is not permitted.

Passages must not be used in advertising, on storefront pages or in promotional material of any kind. A sentence of praise removed from a review that also lists a game's failures misrepresents both the game and the review.

Images and titles

Every illustration, photograph and the mark were produced for this quarterly and remain mine. None is a screenshot and none depicts an actual game; they accompany prose. Game and studio titles appear for identification and critical comment only, with no affiliation or endorsement implied in either direction.

Nothing is sold

This quarterly sells nothing whatsoever. There is no shop, subscription, membership, donation route or advertising inventory, so no order, payment, refund or delivery can arise between us. Any approach claiming to trade under this name has nothing to do with the publication.

Availability

The site is offered as it is. I make no commitment that it will stay reachable, that back issues will remain published, or that internal links will survive a reorganisation. Reviews may be corrected, annotated, supplemented or removed at my discretion.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent applicable law allows, I accept no liability for loss or damage arising from reliance on anything published here, including any game bought, skipped or abandoned because of a review. A review informs a reader; it decides nothing on their behalf.

External links

Reviews sometimes reference writing hosted elsewhere. Those destinations are outside my control, I make no representation about their accuracy or continued availability, and their own terms govern from the moment you leave this domain.

Changes to these terms

This page is revised as the quarterly's practice develops. Whichever version is displayed when you load it is the version that applies, and continuing to read after a revision means proceeding on the current terms rather than any earlier ones.

Rights that survive

Statutory consumer protections are untouched by anything written above. Where the law where you live grants rights that cannot be excluded by agreement, those rights apply in full, and every provision here takes effect only within the space that law leaves.
